Real-Time Performance Metrics

The Sonar Lite Extension uses RUM (Real-User Monitoring), which gathers information about your browser’s connection to the Internet and your desired website. Sonar Lite uses this data to determine how fast a web page loads in your browser and can detect errors or latency in your connection.

You can use this information to optimize your website’s performance.

Track and Compare Web Performance

View the performance of any website, and compare the results with dozens of other websites at once. Sonar Lite makes it easy, either visit your desired website through your browser, or choose from a list of your recently visited sites and get instant results in the Sonar Lite Extension.

You can compare your past results with up to the minute data to track performance changes over time.

Compare your web performance to the rest of the world using GeoPerformance.

Are you or your end-users having a hard time connecting to a site? Compare your results with other users that have the Sonar Lite Extension installed.

Gain crucial insight into how your domains are being routed for users in different regions and cities. You can use this data to make truly unique configurations in your network using GeoDNS services, and improve to end-user performance.

The Internet and the networks we use to surf the web are inherently complex, which leaves many opportunities for something to go wrong. We consolidated all of the tools our network admins have been using for years into one lightweight extension to streamline the troubleshooting process.

Troubleshooting Tools

Retrieval of your WHOis information is the first part of troubleshooting your domain name. A public WHOIS listing includes information about a domain name including:

  • Domain registrar (company the domain name was purchased through)
  • Assigned name servers at the registrar
  • Registration date
  • Expiration date
  • Domain owner
  • If the domain has been suspended by the registrar

If your domain is not registered or has expired, or if your domain information is incorrect, then you will need to contact your domain administrator to renew or purchase the domain name through a domain registrar such as: Domains Made Easy.

If you want to learn more about how DNS lookups work, check out LearnDNS.com

When you register or purchase a domain name, you will tell your registrar which name servers to assign. Usually the WHOIS listing will show the correct name servers, but a check against the TLD servers will confirm the correct name servers have been set by the registrar.

For example, for https://dnsmadeeasy.com/ the name servers would be:

Are these the correct name servers?

If you do not see the correct name servers returned here, please contact your registrar to update the name servers.

We are now going to query the name servers where your DNS records are configured (called the authoritative name servers). These should match the assigned name servers at the registrar as well as the name servers returned from the TLD name servers (the results from the previous two steps).

If the records at the authoritative name servers do not match the records at the registrar, then there is an error that will need to be fixed at either the DNS provider, to correct those NS records.

If you need authoritative DNS services, try Constellix DNS !

Now we will check the host name resolution from an external location. This should return the DNS record configuration that is present on your authoritative name servers.

If your domain is not resolving at the correct IP address, then you will need to contact your DNS provider who will need to update the DNS records at the authoritative name servers. Please note we are checking from an external location here, if you are receiving different results locally, a local network configuration issue may be present.

This step will help you make sure you don’t have any firewalls or network connectivity issues impacting your performance from a system outside your network.

If the port is not reachable, then you will need to contact your hosting provider to find out why the server is not reachable. This may be a server problem or a network issue. The Sonar Lite extension will also provide you with a Traceroute (from one of the Constellix Sonar monitoring locations) that will assist you in identifying where the network problem may be.

We will now verify the web server is responding correctly over HTTP. We test here for an HTTP Status Code .

After you run the check, you will either receive an unsuccessful HTTP status code (200) or a success message. If your check was unsuccesful, you will need to contact your web site administrator or web hosting provider to troubleshoot the web server. If you receive the success message, you will have completed the troubleshooting process, and everything should be correct and functioning.
